Well, I tried it today. Sorry, I couldn't film it, but since it was in Norwegian (except for the word starting with f), you wouldn't have understood it anyway. Of course, as I am not a teacher I couldn't do it entirely for real, I had to use the "imagine I were your child's teacher" approach, which may make it a little less realistic. Anyway, I asked two of ...[text shortened]... ent discussion about swear words today. I guess we are all eejits.
Ask them what they would think if they were sitting in a cafe with their children and you and some friends were dropping this word in ear shot at the table behind them.

Also, note how they qualified the conversation with their child having used the word. You were supposed to say, "No, just out of the blue... I want to teach this word to your children".

I talked with one of them about using it in a cafe, and she didn't think of it as a problem.

I never said I would teach it to children who have never used it. I wouldn't.

No, I never said that, although discussing the history of swear words could be an interesting subject for older students.

Also, you are asking people you know, and they probably know you are a teacher, and not a nut.

You won't get the same results from a total stranger.

Don't worry. He's just upset that his in-laws are teaching racial slurs to his kids.

Well, I can't stop you from being a fan of Fox new.

I believe in free speech and therefore, even though I disagree with the racist, bigoted, tripe they spout I frimly believe in their right to spout it.

Good Luck to you.

I didn't say I was a fan. I work in the media and take a professional interest.

And I still very much doubt this is where your children learnt the phrase "dirty Mexicans".

That's an absurd scenario. If I wouldn't work with the child or be friends with the family, there wouldn't be any reason why I should explain to the child what a swear word means.

Edit: As I said, I am not a teacher, but the colleague I talked to is a teacher, and she also talked about how important it is to tell the parents when you get a new class how she would handle swear words. Most of these parents will be complete strangers at that point, so I think that's about as close as you can get to your suggested scenario. It seems she never got negative reactions.
