Here's my hypothetical question:

(For ease in reading, player A is rated 1400 and player B is rated 1500)

I am winning against player B and losing against player A; if I resign the game against player A first and then beat player B, will my rating be the same if I beat player B first and then resign to player A?

If you lose to the lower ranked player first, then the win against the higher ranked player will count for more.

I calculate something as follows for your rating (1305)

Lose to 1400, rating = 1294 then win to 1500, rating = 1318
against
Win to 1500 rating = 1329 then lose to 1400, rating = 1317

It's swings and roundabouts really and the calculation I used may not exactly the same as used here (I based it on what's in the FAQ, but rounding may be acheived in different ways).

[edit: At the end of the day, worrying about 1 rating point here or there is not worth it. Play to win, play your best and learn by mistakes so that the next game is better. In the long run, your rating is going to go up and down - no one has an 'exact' rating.]

As a general rule it's true that your rating will be higher if you loose x number of games and then win y number of games, rather than the other way round.

I wouldn't loose any sleep over it though.

Personally, I consider ratings in online chess as meaningless unless you have a verifiable "real" chess rating.
