People used to wreck interesting posts when the list of recommended posts of the week was still there. There were also always some asinine posts in the wreck list, but they usually didn't get enough wrecks to be on the first page. I think it could work. At least it would be worth a try.

The idea of recs is so that people don't have to pollute the forums with unnecessary "recced" posts. The only people who do post "recced" along with giving a rec are those who need people to know that they've done "a good deed", or who want people to know that the reccer has just scratched the reccee's back.
I see it like publicising a donation you made to charity. Crude, self-absorbed and completely unnecessary.
