If I got recced for every good post I made, I would have over a thousand recs by now!

That's actually very true, good point. I'd say though that overall the amount of recs given are reflective of the amount of good posts somebody puts here. Looking at my five recs they do seem to be, by and large, for when I've actually had something worthwhile to say, but not all five.
Unfortunately recs are more indicative of the quantity of posts rather than the quality. Maybe everyone should lose a rec for every tenth post they make. That way there would be far greater emphasis on quality.

I've got far more recs for pointless posts asking for no more recs then any of my posts that I've made with any point to them. I think the largest factor deciding is if people see the post as funny although sometimes a well typed thought out argument does the job.

I don't agree.

[EDIT] Having said that, I think there should be a posts per recs ratio, which would give an indication without promoting spamming the forums, like the total posts did.

Some people have gotten recs by either subscribing again and giving themselves hundreds of recs (sad), or having some sad case spend hours in 1 night going through the posts, reccing them all (sadder). Examples of these are katty or bowmann.

I agree with you totally.
Also a post rec'ability often depends on who posted it as much as what the post actually says.

Its true that there are a lot of partisan recs in spirituality and debates.

I had a site idea a while back, which I think would make the rec system more worth while.

I think it might be best to simply drop the rec number as part of a player's statistics. As I see it, the purpose of recs is to make it easier to find interesting posts. You rec a post, not the poster (or at least that's how it should be). If you couldn't see how many recs a person has, maybe people would stop to focus so much on this, to have competitions about it, or to rec people instead of posts.

I have said it many times and agree completely!
Let's get rid of the recs count, let's eliminate it completely!

Have you?

I always thought people wanted to get rid of recs completely, which I disagree with, but its a good idea to still have recs without the rec count.

Yes,I have.
I also wanted to get rid of recs completely but Nordlys got to the core of the solution: the problem are not recs themselves but the rec count which makes people so obsessed by recs.
