Microsoft offers a free registry cleaner if you go looking around their site. I think they offered it because their operating system doesn't get rid of the extra junk in your registry, not even if you delete it - the references are still there.

My personal opinion is that if you want a quality registry cleaner you need to buy one. I use Registry Mechanic by PC Tools and it works great.

I have Registry Mechanic also - I got it a few months ago when they were giving it away in a promo. It works ok.
I normally use crap cleaner which is excellent and very fast working - usually takes less than a couple of minutes. Oh and btw, it's free.
