Anyone seen this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Ark

Absolute genius. One of the most visually captivating films I've ever seen.

It was all in Russian. The version I had, didn't have subtitles.

Didn't matter.

Still amazing.

90+ minutes...all done in one take...2,000 actors, 300 years of Russian history, 33 rooms at the Russian Hermitage, 3 live orchestras...YIKES!

Sounds like a lazy director to me.*

I like the concept though, so I may have to see it now.

I'm curious, how could you get anything out of it if you didn't understand a
word they said? I'm asking because I wonder if perhaps you would have
liked the film less if you had understood it fully, not having to
second-guess what they're talking about.

* As usual I speak without thinking. I just realised the enormous planning
and work it takes to pull something like that off. 😕

Read first. Ask questions later.

I'm asking because...

I'm sure you can take it from there.

Although it's true that he might have liked it less, that is immaterial as to the why he liked it without understanding it fully.

We all know what you are.

Do you prefer fantasy or crime stories?

Why is what is immaterial here.

Stocken merely asked him how could he get anything out of it if he didn't understand a word they said.

I gotta ask. Does anyone else think I overreacted the other night?
'Cause I don't think so. How could I not get mad? That was an open
fu... ornicating insult to my person. But I've told you what you can do if you
really believe that, so... (can't believe this is really your idea of fun).

You'll have to find someone else to frig off to now. Or if you must stay
attached to my back, at least have the decency to use the proper
lubricant. Otherwise you're just plain rude.

That's ridiculous. The how, is obviously with his eyes, ears and brain. The why is the crux of stocken's question.

Maybe you can just crawl back to your private forums and we'll both be happy.

And here I was thinking that maybe you'd located my long-lost twin brother, Boris. We were separated at birth, you see, but managed to keep in touch by monthly letter until his family moved east. Haven't heard from him since. Very sad...

But... uh... yeah, sounds really interesting. From the wikipedia article, it seems to have strong allusions to Dante's Inferno. Did you get that impression?
