NOW THIS IS A STORY ALL ABOUT HOW
IRAQ GOT FLIPPED TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
AND I'D LIKE TO TAKE A MINUTE SO JUST SIT TIGHT
I'LL TELL YOU HOW I GOT HANGED AT 10 PM JUST LAST NIG ...[text shortened]... IT WAS EASY TO TELL
I'D SOON BE FLYIN' FIRST CLASS, DIRECTLY DOWN INTO HELL.
In my eyes, if something that is upside down gets flipped then it is actually the right way up.
What a poet!
Originally posted by StarrmanPersonally, I have no feelings about capital punishment - for or against, other than that it's no deterrent to crime as many people in my country seem to believe. If a society in its "wisdom" decides that it needs to apply capital punishment then it must also accept it's an act of violence/retribution/revenge and needs no moralisation.
And fortunately opinion on the death penalty is still varied.
Either way, the sentencing and execution of Saddam is the most stupid political act imaginable, ranking up there with the invasion of Iraq. This will be seen by many as an act of martyrdom. In effect it is also a death penalty for hundreds, even thousands, more innocents.

Error Kissed, you continue to scale new heights of illogic and paranoid fantasy. It's amazing and amusing.

Kill, murder. Same thing. Personal benefit, national benefit, religious benefit. Voices in your head. They all merge into one. You can justify anything if it suits you. You can justify 9/11. You can justify the holocaust.
Murder = kill = fundamentally wrong. In executing Saddam, the World just sinks further down to his level.

If you can not distinguish between murder and killing as most legal systems do and as most languages do, then it is impossible to discuss rationally the morality of either. You can justify anything if you blur obvious distinctions and take Alice in Wonderland's caterpillar's view of the meaning of words. Some taking of life is justified. The occasions when it is justified can be the subject of different and supportable opinion.
Originally posted by StarrmanWord! There is only one morally justifiable reason for murder and you nailed it on the head. Everything else is BS, including murdering others as a pre-emptive defence of your family, friends and the notion of 'Nation'.
If you're going to push the morality of the situation, then please don't warp it to fit amoral beliefs. Killing is morally wrong for all other reasons save self defence (the 'self' being that which includes the set of family members etc.). Killing in the name of justice is wrong, killing in the name of revenge is wong, killing in the name of any opinion o ...[text shortened]... rhaps, but not morally right. A very worthy rec for you, Dad.

Ah so.
But what is the difference between murder and killing?
Isn't killing just state-funded murder?
So, it's wrong to kill your neighbour with a knife, but it's alright to kill someone else's neighbour with a B52 bomber?
And so if a government decides that killing a neighbour with a knife is alright, then suddenly it isn't murder any more?
T ...[text shortened]... egal difference between murder and killing, morally, however, they are both just the same.
2. Execution is the taking of life under the laws of a country. It is not, by definition, murder.
3. A total nor sequitur
4. It is still murder, but it is now legal.
5. If I toss a brick out of a window and it strikes and kills someone, I have killed them and, at best, I am criminally negligent. If I intentionally shoot and kill someone in order to rob their home, I have committed murder. These are not 'the same'.

Wouldn't it have been easier to have killed him the first moment he was found? Your logical thought process really isn't all that logical here.
See? The US needed him dead ASAP.
My best guess though is that George W. Bush will be a hunted man for the rest of his life.... and some day, someone somewhere is going to get him.
EDIT: My original question has yet to be answered. What would be a more appropriate punishment for a mass murderer.
I don't think that this is the end of the violence in a very hostile enviroment, and I don't think Bush was right for going in and invading Iraq. But Saddam killied people for a variety of lame reasons. What should be a proper punishment? I really await our "civilized" people to answer that.
Why do i feel slightly sad about the death of Saddam Hussein ?
Our country did nothing to prevent his hanging, and for that i feel sad. If they had just thrown a grenade down his foxhole when they found him, i'dve laughed like the rest but this Kangaroo court hanging has left me feel a little cold inside.
