I think it only really becomes interesting once you start building objects, writing your own scripts etc. I don't need another addiction, so I didn't really get into it, but I have a friend who does a lot of pretty cool stuff with it.
In second life I don't think I can do anything I would personally want to do on earth but am not able to, and if i could do it in second life, I'm sure the company that runs it would charge me for the privelege.

I think if you really get into it, you'll want to do things you have to pay for, like getting your own estate. But there is a lot you can do without paying. It's much like TFC - you can play for free as long as you want, but if you want all the extras, you have to pay. As I use it mostly to meet a friend, I probably won't ever pay a penny for it.

I understand your reasoning, but it is a complete different way of thought to mine in terms of what I want out of my free time.
I saw a news article (BBC) where they interviewed a guy who had spent money to buy land and build an office with a sea view. He put his avatar in the office each day so he could look out to sea, as he was unable to do that in real life... for me this would add no value to my life if I did similar, infact I wouldn't even think of using the 2nd life world to do that.
One of the big things that gets to me, is that there is nothing tangible to the output of Second Life for everything that people put in... yes *some* people are making money there, but most aren't as thats economics for you.
Also, what happens when I want to take back out what I've put in - as far as I see it I can't. It doesn't make sense that one day it'll be finished with (people will be on 8th life) and someone will archive the data to tape and it'll gather dust in a warehouse until eternity / arson whichever happens first. What a waste.
With TFC I have no similar worries as it's only a series of chess games, the forum chatter is idle banter I'm happy to throw away time on. Whilst TFC may not be around for as long as second life, the game of chess will be around much longer.

Edit - I found the free stuff was mainly adverts and found that too distracting. It's good you're getting something out of it for nothing by contacting your friend via it 🙂
