when i go walking in a park, i always carry a fluffy cute bunny rabbit in my jacket pocket. then, if a dog attacks, i throw the bunny down and make my escape while the dog is preoccupied.

against the pub bully i employ ventriloquism. i simply make it appear as if some other guy is saying to him 'i rooted your mum last night, you fairy', and make my escape while the bully is preoccupied.

finally, to get rid of burglars, i post signs on the exterior of my doors and windows before retiring for the night. they read 'my neighbours at number 74 are rich, Buddhist, illegal immigrants - they have a lot of good stuff, are total pacifists who believe in karma, and they can't go to the cops'.

Burglars - I have a sign on my door that says "Beware of plants." My home has never been broken into.

Smith & Wesson is hard to argue with.

So tying your shoe and going to work isn't the same thing, but people do both don't they?

what does common sense tell you to do at 3am, when you are fairly sure that someone is in the house and they might be armed?

A similar course of action to what your plans tell you, they're hardly complex enough that they can't be fashioned on the spot. Anyway, as someone pointed out before, common sense suggests that avoidance of areas and people who might bring about such things is a massive defense against them.

It's also about how you approach life, the mindset of planning for unlikely hazards causes you to see the world in a different way. You're forever watching for pitfalls instead of enjoying th eview.

I find living next to a police station generally does the trick for number one.

Number two: The last time a drunk started a confrontation with me he said out of the blue "and who the **** do you think you are" to which I replied "The time? It's about 10:30 mate" and walked off. That generally seems to work.

Number three: I think it would be an instinct thing, don't know how I'd react until the situation occured. Does anyone?

I never worry at my home. Once in a while I get nervous alone in cabs, parking lots at night and walking at night from my office door to my car. Other than that, I feel safe most of the time. The area I live in is heavily armed as the gun laws are very loose and we have a low crime rate here.
