@ghost-of-a-dukesaid Says the chap who spent years describing non-subscribers as scum.
Not once did I hear you say, "apart from the ones who can't afford to subscribe."
"Dr Dr, what's the best way to get rid of ads?"
Doctor, "Pay for a subscription."
Making wise cracks like you did in the aforementioned is much better? You may as well have called them scum....You can't get blood out of rock as they say!!!
I don't think I've met anyone as two faced as you!
Have A great Day!
@very-rustysaid What part of some people just can't afford it don't you get?
Those of us who can should be thankful.

Bottom line:
This chess-site is not a philanthropic endeavor. I imagine that it takes a lot of time and man-hours to present and maintain.
In comparison, other, perhaps better-known chess-sites, charge more and deliver much less.
In this light, I consider my automatically renewing 'script to be of relatively good value.
I do have compassion for the less fortunate. The world is not fair.
However, I do not have sympathy for muckrakers who claim prestigious credentials and still refuse to support the soap box upon which they stand.
@drewnogalsaid This morning I discover that a huge chunk of my iPad screen is taken over by adverts . It’s possible to scroll down and shift them to the top but the information bar is then lost from view 🙁
It appears that some snobby subscribers have missed your point.
We were not complaining about the 'normal' ads, so what do they do? They triple the size of said ads!!

Wolfy,
I don't think it is right for people who can afford to pay not to pay, but that is my personal opinion. Some may feel that they have good reason not to be a paying subscriber because of things that have happened, policy that has changed that they did not like. ( Then it becomes a personal thing with the site itself )
I really don't like those who are non-paying subscribers who come on here just because they have a personal vendetta against another poster be they a paying subscriber or non-paying subscriber.
I am assuming the ads do help cover costs you were talking about. I have no idea on what the paying percentage of paying subscribers would be compared to the non-paying subscribers. I do understand however that the ads do help to cover some costs.
There is a site that charges nothing and delivers more, although you still are limited. Money as I've said many times is power!
Sorry folks, these ads are not part of any conspiracy, just something that Google have decided to unfortunately implement during some time off, catching me off guard. It would explain an uptick in ad revenue though!
I'll try to get on it later. Hang on in there (or subscribe for instant relief! 😉)
