The term comes from the early days of the site, when it only had one name, which was RED HOT PAWN. Any member with a star by their username was referred to as a "pawn star".

Now we have a variety of site names and displays to choose from, but it really is just one site as before.

I think the terms "subscriber" and "non-subscriber" are probably more commonly used today.
