you know if you're interested in getting your son into cooking (or just want to learn more yourself) theres a good book i'm reading at the moment *family food* by heston blumenthal.

gets a bit deep and complex for a family book sometimes but well worth it.

Eh....?!you're supposed to boil them??? It took me 2 hours to find out how to bake a potato...no wonder my "mashed potatoes" turned out awful:'(I'm a failure as a cook

boil or steam, i boil them at home because i'm lazy but you're better steaming them. unless you're making roasted potatoes i've found, then power boiling them in salted water is a must.

you bake a good potatoe by first pronging around the skin with a fork to make holes in the skin...then rub the skin with olive oil...wrap in tinfoil and bake 45 to 60 minutes per size...no boiling required...take a nap instead..

i'm baking a potato as we speak, no tin foil its not needed. oven preheated at 220c (428f) olive oil which has had 10 mins to soak in and i usually do them for about 1hr 15 mins (depending on size)

o yeah and i cook then on the rack.

cooked the whole way through with a crispy skin *yummy*
