The bottom stick is cradled between the thumb and first joint of the middle finger (stationary), while the top stick is held gently by the thumb and index finger (moving). Picking up food is a matter of closing the top stick onto the bottom one with food in between.
Practice with something fairly easy to pick up like tofu cubes or something of that size, as opposed to grains of rice. You'll get it before too long. 🙂

What is the secret? How do I use the wooden trifles?
I hold the bottom firm with my lower thumb and middle finger.
The top one is controlled by the top of my thumb and index finger.

Another trick is not trying to pick your rice up, but go in diagnal and close to make a spoon. Lift that to your face without making a mess. You are more so shoveling the rice with the closed tips, but you can pinch onto the other stuff like shrimp and chicken and even those funky water chestnuts.
Good luck, use your new skills wisely.

I live in China and it's so much easier to use a knife and fork! Why bother with an archaic form of eating! Even the chinese struggle to pick up rice...... they just slip it into their mouth from the bowl making the most disgusting noise ever heard. If you are going to practice - do in fact practice with rice....... it's not that hard!
