Nobody knows what caused the big bang.
Some say it is ocurring again all over: Some inflation theories.
And to the person who talked about the big crunch. We still don't know if it's going to happen. It depends on the matter distribution of the universe and by all measures for it seems to indicate that space will stretch out for ever and reaching infinity with zero velocity.

The gods asked themselves what the next BIG thing would be and they agreed to have a BIG BANG...

More earnestly: The question what caused the big bang is not allowed. This means there is no asnwer which we can deduce. This is because our theories are based on what we can observe and we cannot observe things infiintly near the big bang,.. things become very strange when condensing the matter of the universe ina tiny droplett anyway (oh and nobody knows how far the compression actually went.

No, sorry my friend. Black Holes don't emit anything. Quantum theory requires that particles "popping in and out" have to pop out in pairs. Typically they destroy themselves very quickly, of course, and "pop back out" in pairs as well. However, if a pair of particles pop out near the event horizon of the hole, it's possible for one to fall in and the other not. The one that doesn't is Hawking radiation.

You're link, I think, is wrong, btw... it pulls up an irrelevant article..

I realize that it is pure speculation, it is like asking what happens to all the matter that gets pulled into a black hole. Is simply gone from the universe? What little I understand about black holes is that anything inside no longer has meaning to this universe. This seems to me to be a violation of the conservation of matter and energy.

I think the question is perfectly valid especially if there is any possibility of happening again. Can you imagine what that would do to our universe?
I have heard that speculation is that the universe was compressed to something smaller than an atomic radius. It is hard for me to imagine something the size of the universe being so compresssed.

Recent discovers by astromomers seem to point to something else. The expansion of the universe seems to be speeding up instead of slowing down as was expected. If there is an end to the universe it will be the slow cold death scenario.
