There are a number of different ways to approach this problem:

~ untangle it one strand at a time
~ use a stiff hair brush
~ trim it with an electric razor (no scissors)
~ apply oil and then comb it out

Prevention is the best policy. I suggest keeping it trimmed or braiding the hair so it doesn't become tangled in the first place.
