General

I have long sought for an analogy that would describe what it is like to come in to the General Forum.

Earlier today I stumbled upon one that seems nearly perfect to me. Those of you familiar with NYC before the Giuliani administration will understand what I'm saying.

Coming in to the General Forum is like walking through Penn Station in the early '90s. There you would be walking through what could have been, and once was, a beautiful Beaux-Arts building trying not to step on the winos sleeping on the floor when, out of no where, some drunk sitting in a puddle of his own urine would start yelling at you and calling you names.

Your first reaction was to shout back at him, something like; "hey you're drunk and you probably have mental problems, and you're sitting in a puddle of your own urine. Why are you calling ME a retard?"

But, if you do, the guy might chase you down the street shouting further invectives OR you might wake up some of his nearly comatose friends and they might start screaming incoherently at you or pelting you with their own excrement.

So, the smart thing to do is to keep walking out into the sunshine and catch a cab up to your office in the CitiCorp Center or maybe walk to Times Square and play some speed chess.

I like to think of the General Forum as a rainforest...

...and you're McDonalds.

Or better yet, leave NYC altogether and seek out a better locale.

That was the good old days when being a wino really meant something.

Cash, where we are from, being a drunk used to be a good job. Now they just stand on the street corners panhandling and some of them are knocking down $50K a year without doing anything but looking pathetic.

I hadn't thought about it that way.

I wasn't attempting to laud Rudy or call him any kind of great reformer. The point about Rudy was that while he was mayor he moved the homeless out of Penn Station.

I was sort of going from the direction you were trying to laud yourself. Rudy cleaned things up alright. No doubt about it. But as you may remember it was a time when a young non-English speaking black man got shot by some 90 bullets. Another Haitian man was raped with a toilet plunger by the police. Required surgery to put his insides back together. We must always look at the underbelly of what looks "good."

Are you saying I should remove that reference from my resume?

I think you misquoted Herman Munster. Wouldn't the quote have been "darn, darn, darn, darn, darn"? Maybe you were watching the reuns on the local adult channel.

Again, it was not a judgment about Rudy. You could not have had the experience I described once Rudy came along. that is the only point of the mention to Rudy.
