I've seen the Piazza di San Marco empty, except for myself, at 0600.

I'd engaged in an unexpected and pleasurable tryst during Carnevale. But the early morning found me negotiating descent by drain-pipe just after the strict hotel proprietor peaked in the room and scared my partner half-to-death. Who knew that such relations would be frowned upon in Venezia? I remember feeling like an amateur cat burglar.

It was freezing cold and dark. But I found my way soon after coming into the Square. That moment, as a solitary walk in history, will be forever etched in mind.

I was fortunate that the Carabinieri were patrolling elsewhere.
It was a very lucky day, indeed!

Pilots have the best chance to see it often.

Some people think it’s an optical illusion, but it’s not. It’s real. There is a red flash as well, but this is even rarer; I’ve not seen it.
