Basically when the death by hanging was a common practice, the Irish (those that were sentenced to death) used to pay kids few coins, for a very valuable service.

They ask the kids to pull their legs as soon as they drop through the hanging floor, so that they could die quicker with as little suffering as possible.

Don't Pull my leg. Don't kill me. Now common for jokes and stuff..
