It's great that people are waking up to the unnecessary use of antibiotics which is really positive. What people will be less aware of is just how difficult it is to treat bacterial infection if it gets established in bone. Bone is very avascular. Other than the little canals for blood vessel etc it is dense so not much chance of white blood cells getting at the bacteria to help out if infection becomes established in the bone itself. So whilst it's true that antibiotics shouldn't be over used, if you have had surgery in a bone and treatment of a bacterial infection is thought necessary, like most cats that can type, I am in favour.
@petewxyz saidI had an infection around the root of a tooth during my 20’s, a year or two after having root canal treatment. The tooth was very tender to the touch. I was told that the bone would become infected unless I had an Apicoectomy; a procedure where the gum is peeled back and the tip of the root is partly excised. The worst part was having soggy stitches in my mouth while it healed but it did work!

@yo-its-me saidKefir or any kind of fermented food helps too.
Thanks for making me laugh this morning 😀
Regarding gut bacteria, you can eat whole grains to compensate the antibiotics.

@trev33 saidI had a great dentist 30 years back, I had an absess above one molar, agony, she said she couldnt pull it or do a root canal untill the infection was under controll,I was in so much pain I asked her to drill ,she said the painkilling injection may have no effect because of the infection,i said that I was in so much pain so just get on with it so she drilled away the relief when the puss came out was heaven(the smell was not) she packed it anti biotics for a week then root canal followed by a gold crown that she said i should ger 10 years out of,30 years later its still there, alas she left middlesbrough for scotland and I have not had as good a dentist since.
Dentists in the UK are terrible.
@badradger saidI had a gold crown that was doing really for over a decade when a dentist persuaded me that it wasn't. He replaced it with a white one that subsequently fell off! I think that so put me off dentists making money for nothing that when I had the same extraction that @divegeester describes I didn't bother with the implant. The gap is fine. I pointed out to my wife that sunken cheeks worked for Kirk Douglas. I won't put what she replied - too harsh.

@petewxyz saidA friend of mine told his wife that he needed to have a tooth extracted and that it would leave a visible gap, she said: It won't matter, you never smile anyway. 🙂

@torunn saidSeems to be an important job that wives do. I think it gets called keeping us grounded! 😁

@torunn saidI like that 🙂. The same applied to a man-friend of mine who lost a pre molar but he also suffered with arthritis pain.
