Oh, thanks everybody, this is quite useful. I understand nothing
about this things, yet the names you've provided make it
simpler: Either I get Alarm Zone or AVG for free and keep struggling
when the trial period ends, or put some cash and go for NOD.
Either way, my machine is protected. Right?
Originally posted by Seitsei use it at home, seems to work as well as any of the crud you have to pay for. i work for an ISP and i've seen nothing but problems with symantec's stuff (norton internet security) and mcafee (security centre.) and you pay for those. never seem to have any problems with AVG. its free, you can't lose. if it's not what you're looking for, buy something else.
Oh, is it good and trustworthy????

Crap.
Spy Sweeper is much, much better. Free, if you know where to look.
Originally posted by SeitseOne time I got some virus that AVG did not kill but Norton did. I don't like Norton because it's so invasive, it takes over your system just about. But there is a higher version of AVG that you have to pay for, you can get the junior version for free. But the relative strength of AVG v Norton or others varies from week to week, sometimes AVG will find a kill first and have it in its definition base sometimes Macafee comes in first, its a running race between them all. Try Trojan Hunter and Ewido and see what they find. They usually find differant stuff because of the lag in one or the other adding definitions and sometimes one company never does some definition or other so you can't depend on just one. Ad Aware SE does a decent job but don't depend on just that.

Originally posted by sonhouseyou're right about everything there. i was only recommending based on the idea that the software be a full working version, free, and easy to find. AdAware SE and AVG are all of those. for most home use they should work well. so long as you're not one of those people who click on every stupid banner ad, every free offer, or open every attachment that comes into your e-mail from someone you don't know...

if you're one of those people you should just throw out your computer. it'll be junk soon enough anyway.

Plus other stuff, ie Spysweeper [if you can get it free] Spywareblaster, Adaware, Spybot, etc.
AVG = anti-virus
Zone Alarm = firewall.

Done.
I also see stuff like "seeds" and "leeches" which I assumed to be the ones contributing and the ones downloading but I see some catagories that include the name of a download and then both seeds and leeches have 0 entries. So what is that all about? In short, have you ever been burned downloading stuff from that site and it also looks like some illegal stuff there, cracks and so forth. Sounds like maybe legal ramifications ala the music download sites where individuals have been sued for illegal music downloads. Is this the situation at mininova?

My problem is that I haven't a clue what to do with torrents. I've downloaded this tiny torrent file and it's non descrip and I don't know what to open it with? Helppp.
