Part of the point is that the banana and stairs could even be removed now, and the monkeys would still fight amongst themselves for nothing but the pleasure of the fighting. (Oh, and also to stand around yelling "Ooooh, good hit, mate, don't forget the eye-gouge and the groin-kick!" )
The point is that after a while, the banana and stairs cease to have any relevance at all.
Of course I can explain it. But I'm not going to. I assumed everyone could figure out the point of the story from what I wrote, and the majority have. Explanation of trivia would be the true insult, not only to the readers, but also to the story itself. Explanation of the stairs and banana is pointless, as it does not serve the story in any way, but only serves to detract from its point, as you know, and that is your objective.
So slag off.
