No worries. It's this kind of debate that makes sport a worthy forum!

Beckham is at a peak and playing very well, but it wasn't that many months ago that he wasn't wanted at Madrid nor England.

Becks is a good player that sometimes shows flashes of brilliance. He definitely is a useful addition to the England squad but he'll just prolong your agony by giving you hope under McClaren.

The best addition to the England squad would be a new manager..

I don't think it was a coincidence that Beckham has recovered his form after being dropped by England and Madrid. It made him work harder.

Absolute rubbish.

You are a fool to believe Spanish press releases. Real madrid were saying the same about Beckham before they bought him.

You understand nothing about football if you think Lampard is a luxury player.

True he plays under pressure for England and not at his best. Like Beckham, for people who jump on bandwagons and look for sc ...[text shortened]... n Essien and Makalele etc etc etc Lampard is the guy Chelsea ALWAYS build their midfield around.
Lampard is available for about 10m if anyone wants him.
Any player who has been at a club for more than 3 years is over 25 and has 2 years or less on his contract can buy out his contract using a formula to work out the price.

This is a new rule and Lampard can now buy out his contract for about 9 or 10m.
Manchester United are going to Lose Heinz for about 5m using this new rule.

None of the top clubs want him because he is a luxary player.
He's a very good goal scorer.
But he needs players like Makalele and Ession around him.
He has never had a good game for England.
Can't play with other talented attacking midfield players because his game is basically 'give me the ball and I'll try a 25 yard shot'.
He can't play with Ballack.
What did he do at Chelsea before Makalele arrived?

Lampard is nowhere near the same class as Gerrard, Ballack, Pires, Scholes, Kaka.
Lampard would unbalance Arsenal, Manchester United or Liverpool.
The 5 names above would add something to Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United or Liverpool.
Thats the difference, Lampard is a luxary, needs solid work horses around him and has never played well alongside another attacking midfield player of class because he is basically very one dimensional with a great shot (at times).

Beckham had a bad to mediocre world cup,so did more or less the rest of the England squad with the odd exception Carrick , Lennon, for instance but on the whole pretty pi55 poor. The minute we got knocked out I thought thats it we got to rebuild a young team with 2010 in mind,I think McClaren was of the same mind.Thats why D.B.was dropped not because he wasnt good enough at the time .McClaren underestimated the pressure when results go extremely pear shaped which they did and has been....panicked ?..pressurised?..Would any of the great managers of the Shankly Clough Fergie..stature have been forced into a U.Turn?????

Beckham was made the scaregoat even though the previous 10 goals England had scored Beckham contributed to 8 of them. He has now come back and contributed to 3 out of 4. Not bad for a player who contributes by running, tackling and commiting himself 100%.

You make a good point about Beckham.

I think McClaren thought it was time for a change, Beckham was in his 30's and England had enough quality available to build a new team without him.

He was wrong, Beckham should have been kept around as a bench player if needed because he has unique talent.

Even though I don't rate McClaren, he has been unlucky with Owen and J Cole out.
Also Rooney hasn't played as well as he expected for England, I would put this down partially though to McLarens lack of motivational skills and team stratergy.

Beckham should have definately stayed as part of the England setup and McClaren made a big mistake by using Beckham as a scapegoat, like you say.

mclaren just wanted to make a statement as noone was going to take him seriously. when he dropped becks he wasnt playing very well and mclaren took all the credit for getting rid of what he considered dead wood.

now all of a sudden hes taking all the credit for bringing him back. mclaren is not the right person for the job. i dont believe he has the passion that the squad do. Beckham, lampard, terry, gerrard..... i could go on, have passion for the game. as a chelsea boy im all in favour of lamps being in the team but will agree that he hasnt played as well as he does for the club. i just wonder wether mclaren and sven didnt give lamps the free roll he has at chelsea therfore he cant play his game the way he wants to.
gerrard defo foe the holding roll he has more of a defensive mind than lamps but i dont think you can write lamps off yet.

You are right, Beckham wasn't playing well at the time, but McLaren listened to the press too much. Even though Beckham wasn't playing well he should be on the bench, any team in the world would want Beckham on the bench.

As for Lampard, I haven't completely written him off.
What I am saying is he only seems to play well with defensive midfield players around him.

He does nothing when playing with Gerrard or Ballack, he even brings down the quality of attacking midfielders around him.

If Lampard was the only attacking midfield player, he can do a good job with wingers and defensive players around him.

Lampard though will never play well alongside players like Gerrard and Ballack, he has repeatadly shown he can't adapt his game to develop an attack with short passes and making space for players around him.
He just can't do it.

So taking England you either pick Gerrard or Lampard.
Both can do a job for England as individuals.
Gerard will play well with most midfield players, but not Lampard becasue Lampard can't adapt his game.

So if its a straight choice between Lampard and Gerrard, Gerrard gets the vote every time.

for the holding roll i would have to agree but there has been glimmers of hope when gerrard is on the right and lamps played with a more defensive midfielder. i think as in the brazil game if gerrard plays the holding roll to a strict regieme then they can play together. lamps has def got more of an eye for goal and gets himself in striking positions more than gerrard.

as for beckham, if you are going to drop a world class player like that you only drop them to the bench or the b team for a while. becks did deserve to be dropped at the time that i admit but to kill off his international career? im not sure wether it was the press or venables???

Lennon, Hargreaves, Gerrard, J Cole

Not the most glamorous (a la Eriksson) or what the kids would pick on their computer games maybe, but IMO it's the most balanced and effective midfield England could put out.

How about:-

Rooney
Richardson Scholes Carrick Hargreaves Beckham
P Neville Ferdinand Brown G Neville
Foster

Scholes would come out of retirement to play in this side.
