Oh come on... he was kinda sweet... I loved his reaction to repeated requests for "Wonderwall"... 😛
Nah ok he really was pretty bad... but I was in the far corner... hey, so were you! I remember doing the same card trick over and over again and you couldn't figure it out 😀 So don't exaggerate, I imagine it was much worse where Russ was sitting 😛

Brandy is my ruin. Just sniffing it and I get the "technicolor yawns".

Have to take exception to Wulebgr. Bourbon is not simply an American name for Scotch. Though both are members of the whiskey family, they are very different from one another.
Okay, I should have been more clear. The ingredients differ (barley didn't take well to the American soils, so the immigrant Scots used rye, and then corn, and eventually a blend of corn, rye, and barley). But the process of one (Bourbon) grew out of the processes of the other (Scotch). Bourbon began as an American effort to produce a native Scotch. In their failure, they produced a complimentary rival.

Scotch and Bourbon, the parent and the independent child, maintain a close relationship, and both are a fine compliment to the carved hardwoods of the art of chess.

Moldy Crow is correct that Bourbon is not an American name for Scotch. Nevertheless, Scotch must be made in Scotland; those who make it have American cousins who make Bourbon.

Even mixed with vermouth and poured in an icy glass, shaken not stirred, listening to a hipster mumbling about the vanguard misconception of Warhol art? 😛

Ha! Well, gin I don't like either but rum is a different story, and I forgot to add it in my list of chess drinks. However, it must be an ounce per glass with mineral water and coca-cola so I can dream about a draw, ha!

Now that I think about it, scotch -in my taste- is the only liquor worthy of drinking it straight... plus cognac and tequila, of course.

If you cannot drink it straight, or with a single ice cube, should you be drinking it at all?

No, except Tequila which I prefer with a little salt and a lime.

The only times I fall back to mixers are when I'm at a social gathering with a crappy bar(like a wedding). Then I still kep it minimal; Seven-up and whiskey, cheapo bourbon and sour. But I'd almost rather drink cheap beer than cheap liquor in a mixer. I can drink cheap rum, paint thinner vodka, and gin a proper Englishman wouldn't wash his dog with. But I'm afraid in the area of scotch and bourbon, I've become a snob. Once I tasted the good stuff, I just can't go back. I don't even want the ice cube defiling my single malt 12 year old scotch!

Well, depends on the taste, isn't it?

A crappy metaphor: I like meat a lot... that doesn't mean I will bite the cow when it's standing in the barn. Tastes better after some cooking, don't you think? 😉

Vodka, for example, can't stand it straight. But it kicks butt with natural orange juice. As for scotch, it takes 12 to 24 years to take the humidity out of it... it's like a crime to put water on it, ha. Only exception: Jack Daniels (a bourbon I know).

As for slimjim I totally concur... unless is a fine USD$89 special ed Don Julio bottle, lime and salt are definitely needed. 😛

Everything, of course, in my personal taste.

Taking a bite out of a cow? Yes that is a crappy metaphor. If you want to go with cooking analogies I think it's more accurate to say that you mixing soft drinks with fine single malt scotch would be like pouring ketchup on escargot in a 5 star french restaurant.

Jack Daniels is Tennessee whiskey, which is closely related to Bourbon, as it it to Scotch, but if differs nonetheless. And Jack cannot compare to the better Bourbons, although it's on par with some of them.

Oh, I think I lost you... the point was precisely "scotch, tequila and cognac are the ONLY ones to be dranl straight in my taste" 😉

The rest are to be mixed.
