Maker's Mark - the bourbon.... Macallan - the scotch

(And a big plug for Cabernet Sauvignon - the wine 😵 )

Sounds like you liked it too well! Barf!!!😵

Basil Hayden and Lagavulin.

Man, you're always going on about this Lagavulin. What is it anyway?

It's the best widely-available single-malt Islay scotch in existence. It is round, full, and tastes pleasantly of peat and smoke.

How expensive is it? I'm not a scotch man myself, but my brothers might enjoy it.

This whole thread is ridiculous!

You CAN'T play chess while drinking booze! It distorts the mind, and corrupts all that is good in the world. My advice kids, is to stay away from it.

Instead of wasting my brain cells sucking on a whiskey bottle, when I'm playing chess I prefer to let the strains of classical music wash over me. And I smoke some pure methamphetamine.

Sounds like an old mossy ash tray to me.

Quite right. Well, no, rather different actually... Having drunk quite a bit of urine in my life, I now rate scotch against animals:
You've got the cheap end (Bells, Teachers, Jonnie Walker) which are all dogs' piss.
Then you've got the medium expensive blend, which are all like the piss of dogs that win Crufts.
And the upper middle class of single malts (The Glenlivet, Cardhui, etc,) which are like yer normal cart horses' piss.
Finally at the top you've got the stuff that costs an arm and a leg and that's the Cheltenham Gold Cup / Epson Derby winner over the jumps with Princess Ann on the top of it.
That's the stuff that tastes like it's been left in an ashtray overnight.

I'm sure it's the same with Bourbon (except Four Roses which is like cats' piss), but I can actually enjoy that, so it must be like the juice of the virgin maidens that await suicide bombers in Paradise.

Now sake is a ncie dirnk for wehn you want to lose a game chess of wirte or some masseges in the fourms. Like what I've been doing today. Cheers!

So, can anyone throw on the table a list of decent brands of scotch? I'm afraid I've been feeling happy (as well as my pocket) with Glenlivet and Buchannan's... have I wasted my life? 😕

I don't usually drink and play chess at the same time. If I did, it would be something like a Pina Colata or a straberry dachary (Both of which I mix myself. 😉 )

Sober is how I enjoy chess. However, interesting things happen when I drink & chess, depending on the drink I'm having.

Beer = Great start. However, lousy play after a couple of drinks. Gotta pee every 15 minutes and concentration goes flying.

Tequila = Slow start. Pieces fall everytime I slam the shot on the table. After a couple of moves chess is for ...[text shortened]... c.

Do you believe there is a particular drink for different types of rivals or situations?
how can you?
the more i drink the more bored i get waiting for the people on the other end to wake up and move

Maker's Mark is excellent, but Wild Turkey Rare Breed, and Evan Williams Single Barrel are better. If you are willing to shell out a bit more money, however, bbarr's suggestion of Basil Hayden is hard to beat. In my overtaxed state (soem of the highest booze taxes anywhere), Basil Hayden's is $50 a fifth. WTRB is $30, and i usually have one in the cabinet. Fighting Cock is a good cheap Bourbon, as is the old stand-by, Jim Beam.
