😉
Nor did I. There is a literal interpretation which involves the origins of the phrase and the fact that it literally means to conform to the rules. Normally these rules are set by a person or persons who have the power to "punish" anyone who breaks those rules, or "crosses the line." In current vernacular people tend to use the phrase in a way that is derogatory (for the most part) in the same way that they use the term "butt kiss" or "apple polisher." The opposite of those sentiments is someone who not only pushes the limits, but "crosses the line" and breaks the rules. My definition of the phrase "toe the line" not only includes the literal basis in history, but also accounts for the fact that it is not a prison term about following rules anymore. In the same way that the word "punk" originated in prisons as an african-american prisoners term for someone that would be made a "bi**h," which is now a term plenty of people are quite proud of. Ask people if they are happy to "toe the line" and they will most often give a response which indicates their rebellion against the idea of "conforming."

Edit - Damn, the drunken posting has definitely begun. You can tell by the waxing wordiness. And using words like "waxing" and "vernacular." Which is also probably spelled wrong.

In no way shape or form does "toe the line" mean to bend the rules....Maybe only butt kissers misuse the phrase, i'll have to believe you on that 😛

No. I said that to toe the line was the opposite of bending the rules.

Try reading it again, but slower this time. Either that or I'll clarify again - and none of us wants that,

Ok, you're right again. I didn't say what I meant, didn't make myself clear the first time. Once again I am forced to apologise as I have been defeated by your obviously superior, and maybe more sober wits. Damn. At least I've won some chess today - cuz this discussion thing is really biting me in the ass today/tonight.

ah well, I'll just grin and bear it - 😀

Oh, yeah - and drink some more.

Don't worry, my patzer nerve has been numbed for a few days by my happiness at being unsingle....it's a temporary thing, you'll be back on top in no time.

I'll be glad to be back in the middle of the pack after this. I've been unsingle for a long time... maybe it starts to have the opposite effect in time.
