Originally posted by Sicilian SmaugI agree,I took a look at some of Helden's games and his strength should be somewhere between 1200/1300 at best.
Your point being? I could get my rating to 1900, maybe even 2000 by picking and choosing winning games over losing ones and that isnt my real strength at all., (Not saying Mr Helden was doing this). My point is, without having played him myself, I can tell by Mr Heldens performance against 1200s in a couple of games i viewed, that 1500 is probably not his true RHP rating.
Not that you learn much about openings, middlegame ad endings by playing people rated under 1000 all the times......

Hmmm. I've been looking over his graph and my graph, and its very similar. I'm no cheater, so I don't think this Hal is one, either.
That's why you have a similar rating graph, surely not because of cheating.
Not that anyone can think you cheat however.......

Let's make this as SIMPLE as possible.

Omitting the time-outs, what does HAL's graph look like?
last part of the graph but it looks to me like most of the games he
played were against lower rated players, lower than his true
rating I mean. I am thinking he may be a 15 or 1600 player who
played a lot of 1200's and 1300's. When I first started here,
I won 34 games in a row, thinking I was king doodoo but it was just
I hadn't met the REAL players yet. I think he will get a rude awakening
if he plays some real 1600's or 1700 players. They are stronger than
the rating suggests here I think.

you are trying to actually improve and not just going for higher
ratings. You seem to be consistanly playing higher rated players.
In his case, you see a real flying wedge there, no losses but it looks
like he is just playing people lower than his real strength just
to boost his rating. He as much as admits it in his profile.
"you'll see my rating go to the top" or something like that.
So it looks to me like he wants a high rating. Now that will only work
up to the point you start playing higher rated players because that
becomes self-limiting, you keep on playing players say, 400 points
lower than yourself, and you only get a point or two a game.
You would have to win hundreds of games in a row to get to 2000
that way. Even if he is really an 1800 player, you can't expect to
play 1300 rateds and win EVERY game. Each game you lose drops
you down enough that you have to win another 20 or thirty games
to get back to where you were, doing it like that. So you lose less
if you play people your own strength when you lose and you gain a
lot more when you win. So at some point he will see that and go
after higher rateds and then the spikyness will start. Right now he
is in a honeymoon period which cannot last long if he is not using
engines. This little win streak doesn't mean a whole lot unless it
were to continue to 1700, 1800, 2100, etc. THAT would be suspicious,
going against his previous record like a siren.
Originally posted by Sicilian SmaugI have played him a few times and i can recall only some lost games, some were over very quickly. Now I know I am not the greatest player up here, but I don't lose that easily against players of my rating band. I had a hard time each and every game. I would say his rating potentially could be around 1400 if he just would play 'equal opponents' most of the time.
