Because they eliminated the power of the monarchs. In the days of Good King George III, England was the greatest nation in the world.

So far in the Olympics:

Germany: 18 medals, population 82.2 million, 1 medal per 4.5 million people
Norway: 16 medals, population 4.5 million, 1 medal per 281,000 people
Austria: 10 medals, population 8.2 million, 1 medal per 820,000 people
Switzerland: 8 medals, population 7.4 million, 1 medal per 925,000 people
Italy: 7 medals, population 57.3 mill ...[text shortened]... or something. Are we to conclude that the British suck? That conclusion seems inescapable.
The same reason that we suck at any international competitive athletic sport.

We get crap funding, the training facilities are outdated and delapidated.

If you really want a laugh, wait and see just what a debarcle the 2012 olympics will be. If or course we have all the stadia built in time.

Phuck the Olympics...who has the most kick-ass classic rock-n-roll bands, even more so than the U.S?....Great Britain, that's who!! How many rock bands come from Sweden? ABBA? Give me a break.....Norway?....not any that I can think of.....Germany?...The Scorpions, Ok...cool.... Austria, Switzerland and Italy?...don't make me laugh...France?...they wouldn't even know rock-n-roll from their azzhole....Finland?...."the Cossack trio"?...yeah, they cracked the top 1,000 in folk dance

Britain and Brittons, be proud of your music accomplishments....the Olympics are forgotten tomorrow, but Led Zeppelin will reign into the 22nd century......

On the other hand Finland appears to have this white stuff called snow which is usually quite important in the winter olympics, whereas England very rarely sees any of it. That might answer your question numbnuts.

Nobody cares if they get a bronze medal in curling. I've got 186,000 miles on my Camry. I give them the gold for that.
I will give them a gold medal for saving my life. Last August my Camry was totally smashed up (was doing about 60 mph at the time and got ran off the road by another car) and I just got a slightly fractured rib and a headache.

I suggest you keep the Camry, it is a safe car. 😉

If you reprobates would wake up you'd see I was only comparing what would generally be termed as western European countries. They're similar enough to make a valid comparison. Comparing India with Finland would demonstrate nothing except that they have absolutely nothing in common. In short, it would be like comparing the proverbial apples and oranges.

Geography isn't a strong point of yours then?

The 1 inch of slush that the uk gets yearly, could hardly be compared to a Finnish winter.

No, they are not. As Freddie pointed out, they don't have much of that white stuff in the UK.

If we had an Autumn Olympics in which events were akin in some way to continual rain and grey skies, we'd wipe the floor with all of you.

I'm going to have to take exception to this line of attack. There are many worthy Scandanavian folk/rock bands out there, for example. They're just not well publicized in the west. I've bought CDs by Swedish and Finnish bands like Hedningarna, Loituma, Wimme, Gjallarhorn, and Garmarna, just to name a few. There's a whole website dedicated to the Scandanavian music scene:

Quit your pathetic sniveling and whining. England and Finland have far more in common than they do with India or Japan. Stop using your poor quality of snow as an excuse for your complete inadequacy.

Bergen has an average of almost 2000 mm of precipitation per year. I don't think there is any place in the UK which even has half as much.
