I'd call you a blackguard and a scoundrel and demand satisfaction. Then I'd think a bit more. ๐Ÿ˜ต

Could it be that the rook on g8 is the promoted piece?!

This seems to work! First the black a-pawn moves; then the dark-squared bishop makes its way to b8; then two rooks, two knights, and the queen assemble on the g1-a7 diagonal and are gobbled up by the white f2 pawn on its way to a7. Once the pawn is on a7 the pawn can move b7-b6 releasing the light-squared bishop. The bishop is then free to do its devilry on b3 letting the a-pawn through to promote to a rook.

There it is.

The position is legal, and Black must retract ...f7-f5 so that white can retract Rf6. Per the sequence described, pawn retractions aren't possible until the rook unpromotes!

This proves that last move was ...f7-f5 and white can proceed with 1.ef6, mating in 4.

Woohoo!

That was taxing! Thanks for coaching me through it.

Yes, they [retros] are taxing at first. I made the mistake of forcing myself to finish a couple of them, and got addicted. ๐Ÿ˜ž

Why is it not possible that Black's last move was f6-f5? Ok, then White's last move had to be b2-b3, but what's the problem with that?

Edit: Of course, b2-b3 must have happened earlier to let Whites dark square bishop develop.

Edit 2: But what was Black's previous move (before Whites Rf6-g6)? f5-f4 looks like the only altenative, but didn't we agree that White's bishop must have been captured in f4.

As a CONNOISSEUR of chess programs and with over 30 years of CHESS under my belt, I proclaim this a DRAWN position. TRUST me on that. I fed it into my UNMATEABLE program and ran dozens of DEEP PLY shootouts with all but two games ending in a draw. The two games white won took OVER 30 moves.

Dude, make a move first before making a demand. A lover of programs and a quantity of years played does not a GM make, or several of us would be getting titles. TRUST me on that! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Although I am NOT a GM, I play better than one. I play computer-assisted chess--some call in CENTAUR chess.

I have come to rely very heavily on CHESS programs to solve problems FOR me.

If you are referring me to PLAY a chess game on this site, well, I simply cannot.

The game is a draw at the highest levels. The only CORRECT way for white to win is if black makes an INFERIOR move. And you can take that to the BANK.

Why don't you feed the solution given in this thread into your unmateable engine and show a refutation? Assuming you are speaking of the first puzzle that is...

BTW the solution is show on page 3.

Thanks for pointing ME in the right direction (page 5).

I'll plug it in to the PROGRAM and then hit the sack. I'll let you ALL know what comes of it in the morning.
