Everyone knows that Chess is a National Pride in Russia.
To loose the title to somebody else is quite unpleasent to them. I love the Russians, but we have to be fair and honest in all aspects so we can be good friends.

Hmmm... I wonder why they don't? Yeah, that's a real brainbuster.

From chessbase.com:

Elista 2006: Match delayed, next game tomorrow
30.09.2006 We have just received word from Elista that there will be no World Championship game today. President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov issued a brief statement stating that the next game would be tomorrow, Sunday, October 1st. No details were given as to whether it would be game five or six. We will keep you briefed.

The FIDE President flew to Elista last night. Perhaps the situation can be salvaged if the forfeit is withdrawn.

I hope all big international tournaments shun Topalov for this childish and unsportive behaviour.

John Nunn's opinion on chessbase.com, very much against FIDE's handling of the situation

There has to be some give and take between both parties involved . On Kramniks part maybe he should go ahead with playing with a common toilet. As for Topalov the forfeit should be cancelled.

A second to help the player play the game. A team of GMs to help the player play the game. Bringing people to distract the other player. Now this stuff in 2006. "Ha ha charade you are." What has the chess world come to?

Nigel Davies doesn't seem to like it either.

"As for the 'refusal to shake hands', this attempt to claim the 'moral high ground' leaves me with nothing but contempt for Topalov and his cronies. This is not the way for a 'champion' to behave."

In point of fact, proceeding with game five was a violation of the rules.

However, in addition to the official rules published on FIDE's website (which are usually observed), and the specific tournament rules (which vary and were spelled out in this case in the contract that only Kramnik appears to have read), FIDE's main rules are that it makes the rules and they are always already what FIDE wants in the moment.
