or in other words: don't just read chess books, but study them.

another tip for the opening besides learning opening princibles (which is the most important for someone under 1400): pick one opening, any opening, and stick to it. well, in fact you need three openings. one for white, two for black against 1.e4 and 1.d4, of which the d4 will be rarely used. for others, just wing it. (although players less than 1400 seem to use d4 a LOT more than 1500 and up.) -the idea is you'll get a reasonable opening phase, gather experience, but still don't have to use much or any time on learning openings.

lets face it. most of you poor american fellows wont make it over 1400.
    no matter what.

the sooner you accept that as a fact the easier your life will be.

1400 rating is the ultimate challenge for any american chess player. like GM-title is for any european player...

This site needs an anti-rec. Something for the truly stupid posts that seem to pop up all the time.

Well, what would a chess forum be without a bit of racism?! Honestly people, in other sports the competitors shake hands, it seems in chess its a case of handbags at ten paces.

Hahah, there is some truth to this but it's not limitted just to american people.

If your over 1800 OTB, your in the top 15% of the worlds chess players!!

These number are 3 year old but nothing has changed. I know this is Rhp but take a look at the player tables for just the active player. Have a look at what percentage of them are over 1800. You'll see. It's not exactly 15% because it's Rhp and not OTB but that 15% should still be true right now.
