Don't you want to get to that goal rating without cheating to get there. What I'm saying is won't it feel better to actually win games by checkmate to get to that rating rather than accepting and challenging games that have 1 day time banks and collecting and hoping your opponent won't move within the time limit so you can get a free win.
If you don't do that all the time, then that's fine and all.
Originally posted by scandiumTrue, but it is also not really an achievement to claim to be a 2100 strength if you get there by this methods. I am sure some of the 1600s of the site who play hundreds of games at once could stall all their lost positions and only claim the wins until they got to 2100 but they still would not have proven themselves as being able to hang in there with the big boys.

Even though I got to 2100 recently, I score less then 50% against players of this level and above so dont yet think of myself as a big gun yet.

Originally posted by Best101Claiming a time out win is not "cheating" but in case you did not realise my original post was very "tongue in cheek" as I had just received a boost on the way to 2100 as a result of 4 time out wins including 2 wins against EveRyDay who at that time was one of the top players here who I would normally never have beaten. Those games were 3/14 and 3/28 games so hardly a 1 day time bank and certainly not taken with the objective of a quick timeout win in mind. You don't know me but if you did you would know I never take 1 day time bank games and that I rarely take time outs.

At the time, although a number of others succeeded I failed to get there although a period of reasonably solid play has kept me hovering around the 2000 mark. Now my rating is above 2050 again and the question arises "Can I reach 2100?","Can anyone else?". I am not a 2100 player (I know that so it is a target I cannot maintain even if I can reach it) but a couple of draws against a 2300 player have helped me on my way.

Oh dear not only did I fail in my deserved push to 2100 but have now dropped below 2000 despite taking on many less games and it looks as if there is no end to the fall.
OK I know that 2000 is way above my true rating so the fall is a long overdue correction but it still sucks!
So, a new bump?
Anyone planning on 2100 again? 😛
For me, I don't expect to hit that mark anytime soon. I was struggling to get back to 2000 for over 2 months, hitting 2000 only once until two well-played Sicilian Defences (with white and black) against a 2100ish player pushed me to 2038 all of a sudden. It is too bad the game history is scrambled by the recent database problems. Since then I lost some of those points but try to stay above the 2000 mark. (I will probably fail)
Maybe, if I play solidly here Tournament 3679, I could reach that target?
Probably not...

Its 21 months since I started this thread when I was 14 points short of my target and the closest I have got is 2095.
It begs the question will I ever get there and shows (for those that think otherwise) how damn hard it really is too improve (at my age).
Good question?
I ditched my misleading books and bought about 24 new ones. I purchased a good DB (to help fill in those annoying gaps) and I determined to read and study them as part of playing on line here and it has definately helped.
OTB last year I achieved excellent league results and this year I won the Major in the Portsmouth Congress. I am making less mistakes in the openings and getting more tactics right.
My rating OTB has indeed risen but I am still a long way short of my peak of 2170 in 1986.
Here after 21 months I am static (but my rating level is still slightly higher than that I have achieved OTB, i.e. about 100 points).
It seems I have reached my limit but I am 55 so studying and improving is harder than it used to be, the wife complains and if I'm not careful I neglect my clients work (you see I am self employed so it is pretty easy to spend time on chess that I should spend on earning money).
But I have spent a lot of time (too much) to no avail. It just goes to show how hard it is and that when we suddenly do see players improve from 1600-1700 (or lower) to 2100-2200 (or higher) literally overnight that some outside assistance is the most probable reason.
