@Great-Big-Stees saidIf the brown triangle, which you might know from Whatsapp would be the downvote, some of the less mature might be inclined to use it ore often for the heck of it...
How ‘bout changing from thumbs up to a diamond and a thumbs down to a hunk of coal?🤔
@Arkturos saidIt's okay, I wouldn't want to live in your head, either, even though I clearly have a little day-flat in there somewhere.
I seem to remember you are not even sure who you are talking to when talking to me, considering your revelation that you have mirage-like models of me in your head that have disappointed you for not being perfectly aligned or congruent.
How exactly could or should I help to correct that, given that it's your head and that I respect your personal sovereignty? -- although c ...[text shortened]... uld not allow you to acknowledge such a thing, then it would be incorrect for me not to accept that.
@venda saidI believe it sometimes becomes a popularity contest.
Personally,I never use or even look at the thumbs.
I think they are a waste of space and resources.
I don't even look at the "3 people recommended your post" when I get that message
I would imagine personalities are a big part of the thumbs thing as if someone you don't like puts up a post you give them a thumbs down and vice versa without any consideration.
Keep them or do away with them.I don't care either way.

@MartinS saidAnonymous does not mean meaningless.
Why not simply get rid of the thumbs; they are anonymous so fairly meaning less.
If thumbs were identified then all I can see is more abuse in the forums if a poster knows who gave them a thumbs down.
Look at the heavily thumbed down posters such as RajK999, they try to turn even unrelated posts into Israel and Gaza posts. Cmmon use some of your braincells.

I don't speak moron; could you explain what on earth thumbs have to do with Israel and Gaza
Don't overthink things guys, I know we are on a chess forum. This subject has been discussed many times before. 🙂
The thumbs up, thumbs down option is just a way of giving some sort of feedback on posts.
Some use it in a passive aggressive way to avoid an actual discussion about differing views and opinions.
On some social media (don't ask me I'm not on there anymore), you can like a post. I used to be confused when someone would post news of say a bereavement and others would "like" the post.
Apparently, in ancient Rome, thumbs up actually meant the spectators wanted the winning gladiator to cut the loser's throat, whereas thumbs down meant sparing the loser. (The history buffs may say otherwise).
@congruent saidMaybe context matters and in such a case (as an alternative to sobbing or hugging emojis) a thumbs-up might be meant to indicate something like "good innings" or "thank you for your work and your transit through life" as opposed to something like "good riddance -- let the grave-dancing begin!"

@Very-Rusty saidYeah, now that's a good point. Maybe it is better to allow some petty anonymous passive-aggressive dogpiles to prevent the reactor from overheating, so to speak.
@Arkturos
I don't believe it would deter anyone from giving thumbs down. It would just cause more arguments which are not really needed. FYI....I thumb down a lot of nonsense posts if you want to know. 😉
