Whether you are going or staying, sitting or lying down, the whole world is your own self. You must find out whether the mountains, rivers, grass, and forests exist in your own mind or exist outside it. Analyze the ten thousand things, dissect them minutely, and when you take this to the limit, you will come to the limitless.

What sages learn
Is to return their nature
To the beginning
And let their minds
Travel freely in
Openness.
What developed people,
Learn is to link their nature
To vast emptiness and,
Become aware of the
Silent infinite.

- Huai-nan-tzu
What sages really learn
is to sit down and shut up
when the soup is served.

To write even one stroke
about the ten thousand things
means less than ten thousand
characters remain.

What undeveloped people learn
is that developed people are crazy.
[insert your own line here]

Let's back up a step.
Show me this "vast emptiness" --
then we can talk.

The "Silent Infinite"
is really not so silent
to those with ears.

Keep to unity without shifting.
With constant presence,
Whether active or still,
The student can see the
Buddha nature clearly.

It has been asked,
“How should those who enter
the Path apply their minds?”
All things are originally uncreated
And presently undying.
Just let your mind be free;
You don’t have to restrain it.
See directly and hear directly;
Come directly and go directly.
When you must go, then go;
When you must stay, then stay.
This is the true Path.
A scripture says,
“Conditional existence is the site
of enlightenment, insofar as you
know it as it really is.”

So high you cannot
Climb or get close to it;
Raindrops scatter in the flying wind.
The gate is barred with green moss.
Suddenly forgetting thought,
Without attainment,
Only then will you be sure
The gate has been open all along.

In a grove of tall bamboos
Beside an ancient temple
Steam rolls from the brazier
In fragrant white clouds;
I show you the path of Sages
Beyond this floating world,
But will you understand
The lasting taste of spring?

You should each individually
Clarify your own mind,
Getting to the root
Without pursuing the branches.
Just get to the root,
And the branches come of themselves.
If you want to get to the root,
Just get to know your mind.
This mind is basically the root
Of all mundane and supramundane
Phenomena; as long as the mind
Does not become obsessed with
Good and bad, you will realize that
All things are basically just so.

Who tries to help the student to see?
Shifting about, the unity abides.
Presence happens without local governance.
Keeping to unity distorts the attention.
Any old way is fine with me.

“Death is the only wise advisor that we have. Whenever you feel, as you always do, that everything is going wrong and you're about to be annihilated, turn to your death and ask if that is so. Your death will tell you that you're wrong; that nothing really matters outside its touch. Your death will tell you, "I haven't touched you yet.”

To cling to oneself as Buddha,
Oneself as Zen or the Way,
Making that an understanding,
Is called clinging to the inward view.
Attainment by causes and conditions,
Practice and realization,
Is called the outward view.
Master Pao-chih said, “The inward view
And the outward view are both mistaken.”

Cease practice based
On intellectual understanding,
Pursuing words and
Following after speech.
Learn the backward
Step that turns
Your light inward
To illuminate within.
Body and mind of themselves
Will drop away
And your original face will be manifest.

A buddha is one who does not seek.
In seeking this, you turn away from it.
The principle is the principle of
Non-seeking; when you seek it,
You lose it.
If you cling to non-striving,
This is the same as striving.
Thus the Diamond Cutter Scripture
Says, “Do not grasp truth,
do not grasp untruth,
and do not grasp that
which is not untrue.”
It also says, “The truth
that the buddhas find has no
reality or unreality.”

I think Pao-chih and Pai-chang deserve bonus points for that one.

Five stars for that one (one for each element), and a complimentary voucher for five deluxe noodle bowls.

My teacher said to me,
“The treasure house
within you contains everything,
and you are free to use it.
You don’t need to seek outside.”
