Only someone with no concept of what a musician is would consider whether he loved his audience.

Bundle Bull !!
Been a musician my whole life fella.
Anyway, I officially recognize that you have a concept of what a musician is! What do you play?

Alright, Zappa was a knowledgeable musician and creative. I respected him for his familiarity with 20th century symphonic music.
I lampoon him because he dished it out to everybody else in spades.
If he were here today he'd understand that. You dish it out, you should be willing to take it when it comes your way.
He was creative and a little more ybe I'll even forgive him for his digs at Jimi Hendrix - who could play circles around Zappa.
Originally posted by PinkFloydYou can't say Hendrix and Nugent in the same sentence! He had the greatest natural gift, he reminds me of Django in a way but that's another bag altogether.
Hendrix knew his licks, much like Nugent and Frehley. But none of those 3 would be considered virtuosos.
But Hendrix kills every electric player there is. He really does. The only person who can stand next to him is Santana I think. But Hendrix's soul is outta control. I can't believe I didn't mention him earlier. Equally crazy of me not to mention is my favourite group ever--the Grateful Dead. They play country, acoustic, rock, blues, psychadelic and they're just so solid from all angles. They're good enough to be written about in the spirituality section!

I say all this because when I think of groups like the Greatful Dead I picture musicians all sitting around stoned out of their minds writing and/or playing music. Perhaps I am stereotyping them to harshly?
Originally posted by The Dude 84Conceded what point? To show contempt for your audience is stupid for any artist. Zappa occasionally liked to goof on his audience, to a degree which I think was rude. Of course hippies could love anything at times then.

I was a composition major and play guitar and double bass.
I played lead guitar in a number of combos the last being a professional gospel group.
Originally posted by whodeyThat's exactly the point. jaywill is trying desperately to categorise someone who cared not about categories. He'll never understand a man like FZ and he'll also never understand his music.

To me, if an artist hates his audience is incidental. If they're good they're good. I almost trust artists less who value the opinions of a mass of people they have never met. Obviously it's ok to like your fans, but I'm with Bob Dylan who doesn't think the fans are on the same level as the artist. The fans come to see the artist and not the other way around.
I wish I knew more about composition. I've played guitar for years and I'm playing Saxophone now and keyboard a little.
Originally posted by whodeyYeah, especially Jimi who was on less drugs than a lot of people think. As for placing a value on their music according to the mindstate they're in I think I'll say this. Some peoples minds are in crazy places whether they're on drugs or not. Jerry Garcia, my favourite all-around musician and role model!, was genuinely the most musically curious person around, and he was REALLY smart and creative. Corporate people were always shocked when he spoke in boardrooms about the bands concepts becuase they know his reputation as a drugged out rocker and didn't expect such an eloquent man with a sharp mind. I don't think drugs can be separated from the creation of their music, but it is nowhere near its sole inspiration.

It is useless to say what would have been without drugs, but who wasn't on drugs? Coltrane is an intersting example because his music got way further and abstract only once he kicked all his drug and alcohol habits (though he was never on lsd...) and he was a major influence on the Dead.
Most importantly, I don't think the issue of drugs influence on the music matters to me at all! I love the music for what it is. Whether it was created on drugs, a sober mind or by aliens from outer space it'll still all sound the same!
I just read part of your post again and I'll say I don't think drugs did anything to take away from the music, and since the music was so good and drugs were an undeniable part I'll say if anything it made it better. Although it's a miracle Jerry lived as long as he did given his consumption.
