John 2:1-11 Names of God Bible (NOG)
Jesus Changes Water into Wine
1Three days later a wedding took place in the city of Cana in Galilee. Yeshua’s mother was there. 2 Yeshua and his disciples had been invited too.
3 When the wine was gone, Yeshua’s mother said to him, “They’re out of wine.”
4 Yeshua said to her, “Why did you come to me? My time has not yet come.”
5 His mother told the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Six stone water jars were there. They were used for Jewish purification rituals. Each jar held 18 to 27 gallons.
7 Yeshua told the servers, “Fill the jars with water.” The servers filled the jars to the brim. 8 Yeshua said to them, “Pour some, and take it to the person in charge.” The servers did as they were told.
9 The person in charge tasted the water that had become wine. He didn’t know where it had come from, although the servers who had poured the water knew. The person in charge called the groom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the best wine first. When people are drunk, the host serves cheap wine. But you have saved the best wine for now.”
11 Cana in Galilee was the place where Yeshua began to perform miracles. He made his glory public there, and his disciples believed in him.

Originally posted by RBHILLPotable water was in limited supply; wine was the viable alternative.

This vintage was the finest ever served... before or since.
Originally posted by SuzianneAll sermons should be 61 minutes. In china and Africa they preach all day. Why be like us Americans and go for a 20 minute message?

Originally posted by RBHILLPerhaps it was the best non-alcoholic wine ever made. We can only guess. π

I don't see anything religious in not taking alcohol in moderation; however most of us who do drink it possibly drink too much of it.
The OT law and contemporary religious disciplines and abstaining, are an attempt to follow the commands "you will not" and make the inside pure from the outside. Impossible. Purity comes from the inside out, therefore "you will not" becomes an output of being changed inside, rather than an input to change the inside. Alcohol is food and drink which passes through the body - as scripture points out somewhere.
I think the wine at Canna was alcoholic.
Originally posted by RBHILLHe certainly drank alcoholic wine at the passover celebration. Grapes were harvested in June September, the passover was held in March-April meaning that the wine Jesus drank would have certainly been fermented by then, even if no additional yeast or sugar was added. Grapes have natural yeast on their skins and containing natural fermentable sugars. In other words even if you simply crush and store them, they will ferment and produce alcohol.

Originally quoted by RBHILLThis verse suggests that Jesus had no objection to supplying "drunk" people with even more alcohol. Does this undermine the notion that alcohol "in moderation" is OK, as opposed to getting "drunk" being not OK?

Originally posted by FMFThe statement by the person in charge does not prove the people were drunk nor was it intended by the writer to give that impression. The purpose was to show how the creator of the universe could create from water and give it the appearance of age.

In the beginning it was the earth that was created out of water. The evolutionist claim the earth is billions of years old. Does that mean they are drunk?
Originally posted by RJHindsThe verse ~ in English ~ clearly suggests that the guests were already drunk when the good wine was created for them. If the "original Greek" suggests something different, then I don't know about that.

Originally posted by RJHindsDo you think this verse somewhat undermines the notion (often bandied about by Christians who drink ~ I was one of them) that alcohol "in moderation" is OK, as opposed to getting "drunk" being not OK ~ leaving the devout drinker happy to define "in moderation" as per necessary? π
I just told you, so now you know about it. π
