Because the word does not belong to Christians. Members of other religions can get married and so can atheists.
In my home country polygamous marriages can be legal (clearly not Christian).
South Africa legalized gay marriage today based on the fact that not allowing it violated the constitution.

I thought that gay marriage here in South Africa would be an entirely legal and social affair but it seems that various church ministers will also be performing the ceremonies.
