About 2,000 yrs. ago, in the Levant. If you believe the stories, that is. It's impossible to verify, of course, since he left neither writings nor any other physical evidence we could examine now.

@moonbus; Of course not, everything happen yesteryears when was no reporters no cameras ect, ect, ect!

Joe Smith claimed he found golden tablets with strange writings on them under a rock in New York, and that an angel helped him translate them. That would have been really solid evidence; philologists could have studied the writings and metallurgists could have studied the material. Alas, the angel took the tablets away, 'ascended unto heaven' as it were, so we can't verify that now either.

@moonbus; All the religions were invented to control the people, unfortunately in 21 first century that attitude did not change.People that benefit such as jewish, christianity, islam are the one to benefit, and yet believers are happy to be control.

Religion is not just about control. It is also about hope and a sense of justice.

@Ghost-of-a-Duke; Justice? I suggest to look at history, the dark ages of Europe, the inquisition, persecution ,the crusaders and so on if that's justices then you must be blind,or you don't want to know!!

Hi, I think you misunderstand my meaning. As an atheist I agree with you in part, that religions are a means of control. - My point however is that for the followers themselves, religion gives a sense of hope and justice. For example, that life continues after death and that bad people will be punished for their crimes etc.

Being a self aware human with fears of mortality isn't easy, which is why I think religion is a crutch for a great many. Viewing them as just a means of control is a bit too simplistic and ignores the reasons so many people embrace religions.

In this world right now as it is with God being hidden, we reveal what we are by all of things we do and say, all of our interactions with each other and the things of this world. A thief will steal, a liar will lie, a hate mongrel will spew and act out in hate, what wouldn't happen is true love freely given to God and each other because there would be instant consequences with God being revealed.

God is creating a race made in His image, love must come freely to be real, not due to instant consequences, you'd get followers out of concern for their self-interests, in this world now, Relationships with God can be due to love, faith allows for that, where beliefs when acted upon without absolute proof could cost someone, it reveals something about the followers faith in God. You can say you believe in God yet sleep with your neighbor's wife and steal from your job, you reveal what you are not by what you say, but how you conduct your life.

Jesus raised the level of requirement to even our thought life when He said if we look at a woman with lust, we have committed adultery with her in our hearts already. We hate others, or we condemn others for things we do, we show what we are and when judgment day comes and we are all standing in front of the Truth everything will be revealed nothing will be hidden, every secret sin, everything done in the dark, every word uttered. None of us will be guiltless, but those that accepted God's salvation in Christ, only because He took the punishment and guilt we have and deserved upon Himself.

So, in the end when this evil world draws to an end the truth about everything will be revealed, the mystery of creation. He hides from us because it suits His purposes in what He is doing. This temporary life will, end and eternity will begin for us, one way or another.

@KellyJay; You're so brain washed-up you can't distinguish between right and wrong!

One should, I think, take Richard Dawkins’ comment seriously, that religionists believe what they say they believe.

No Christians that I know of say that they believe because they feel they are being controlled or that they want to be controlled. Some of them may well want others to be controlled, because they think everyone’s a sinner and is liable to go around hacking people to death with machetes if there’s no threat of eternal consequences. But what they actually believe is what they mostly say they believe, which is that justice will be meted out after death, and that all apparent injustice in this life will be seen to have served some divine plan in the end.

Your opinion of me isn't a response to what I have said, I in good faith responded to your question and this is all you do.
