I still do think its a free gift, because the world's worst killer or rapist can ask God for forgiveness, just like the robber on the cross* and God will still be merciful.

you know they were thieves and not murderers or rapists.
and you don't know what they were charged with stealing.
One treated Christ with kindness and he was the one saved.

doesnt it make a bit more sense then " I accept...." you know the rest of that one, or even belief.

I don't think God is so insecure that He would punish somebody for not loving Him, or even didnt know he Existed.
That would make him less than I myself am in that I could easily want a buxom movie actress to love me , but I would think of punishing her for those reason, the only thing I might punish her for is bad acting and then only by not going to her movies.
