What is meditation?

Depends on what your meditating on....

Most meditate on the tip of their nose.

Others meditate on a blue flame.

Others meditate on the great silence.

Others meditate on the stream of thoughts that go past.

All these types of meditation have one or two or three goals in mind.

1. find peace and tranquility.

2. find God.

3. contact the higher self.

It is true that if you meditate for a long, long, long, long time you may find God, but in this age of Kali no one can meditate properly for so long.

To find God one must subscribe to the eternal bonafide scriptures of Vedanta Sutra by Srila Vyasadeva and follow the recommended process of spiritualizing ones whole life, and in this way you will come to know God in truth.

Then with this higher understanding, you take the truth of God into your meditation and your meditation becomes contemplation.

You can then contemplate truth in meditation or without meditation forever to eternity.

Not agreeing or disagreeing with your post so much, I just like to add that meditation can become another form of dualism if not implemented the proper way .(The "proper way" seems to be different for everyone, but most do it one way or the other. 😀 ).
Anyway , doesn't matter where you start, ie. tip of your nose, etc. , it matters where you end up.

I just keep bringing my focus back to my centre all day and all night, whenever I can remember to do so.

Say that again, but substitute meditation with medication.
It still makes sense.

Yes, it is said to be a transformative experience but you do not know what kind of butterfly is going to emerge. Just that it will be a butterfly.

I hope you have a nice day. Like really nice. Something revelatory so you can come back and go "oh Geez Charlie, I just had a religous experience..." 😀

Or whatever....
Jesus, was it? Hows he doing?

Meditation is not defined by focusing on anything. It is the art to bring your mind to rest. Compare it with sleeping, but now fully awake and aware. The ability to detach yourself from your running thoughts is beneficial for your well being.

Yes and this why I said .....peace and tranquillity also.

BUT...

When you die, you will take birth in this world of suffering again, so your temporary peace is terminated.

For never ending peace, one must return to their real home in the spiritual world.

Yes I agreed with your first point; meditation can lead to tranquility of the mind.
Your other points are not very interesting to me. They are mainly based on fear and hearsay.
