have fun on your high horse. i am going to just take my clearly inferior intellect(compared to your awesome awesomness) and go listen to my kettle album, track 4.
It is my belief from what I hear that the melody creating talent is waning in popular music today.
They crank out these duds now by the thousands. And they do make a lot of money.
Most of them seem to be extremely weak in the melody line. But they all lay down a HEAVY BEAT. Rock has been reduced to its crudest essentials these days - a heavy back beat with dull few notes for a primitive melody motif, and a cycle of chords which give the simplistic melody line a facade of originality.
Nothing spiritual about my dislike for it. I just don't like it. Outgrew this stuff already.

why do you feel the need to ignore the fact i said "every sequence of sounds is music, not every sequence of sounds is good music"? why do you feel the need to use an unbalanced psychopath as an example and why do you choose to ignore the fact that i said that somoene's music is another's garbage? and why are kittens so darn cute?
we may never know the answers to these questions. what a shame

who are we to discuss what is art? we can however discuss what art appeals to us. i can say twilight is the most horrible piece of trash ever written but millions of 12 year old girls will disagree with me and most violently i might add.
art is experienced individually. it takes taste into account. and no matter how much art critics would try to justify their ridiculous career choice by telling us what art to like, in the end, the one who gets to decide is you, concerning you.

most people i disagree with are mostly civil. for example i disagreed with shark in this thread but both he and i refrained from name calling. it is called decency, something to which you are probably not accustomed to. name calling on the internet is most often reserved when someone is trying to vent some frustration towards someone else( sadly i did that too ) or simply a testament to poor upbringing, cowardice(since you wouldn't do that in the real world) or i am sure you can find some other reasons why anyone would be a richard.
don't bother answering, i don't care

Keep projecting, buddy. I'm sure it helps you cope.

Does it not occur to you that sometimes, some things are just clearly false though?
Look, if you produce a reasonable defence of the claim that the sound of Rome burning would be music because Nero liked it, I'll retract.
why do you feel the need to ignore the fact i said "every sequence of sounds is music, not every sequence of sounds is good music"?
I didn't, I just pointed out that the sequence of sounds produced by the burning buildings of Rome was not music, given what a competent speaker understands by 'music'.
why do you feel the need to use an unbalanced psychopath as an example
Just to underline the point really.
why do you choose to ignore the fact that i said that somoene's music is another's garbage?
I haven't, instead I responded by making the point that even if somebody thinks, say, rap is garbage, they still know that it is music. They just think it is rubbish music.
we may never know the answers to these questions. what a shame
I've just dealt with most of them.

(I was going to start a separate thread but...), Rock'n'roll music. Is it the devils music? If yes how so? What defines rock? ("rock 'n' roll music"was the origonal title, later refined to just "rock" )
Is it just as hard to define as "music"?
Ok. I'll give it a shot.
1. guitars(s)
2. power chords ...[text shortened]... much. I just have no taste for it. And I am a minority ethnically in the US.
You would be the perfect person to answer, dearest and most esteemed jaywill: why was rock considered the devils music? huh?

You're probably right.
But you get to a certain age when bigotry is more convenient and fun.

It is the devil's music! That is except for Franky Lyman.
Just kidding. I'll be back latter and attempt a more serious reply.
Originally posted by jaywillI used up all my bigotry when I was young. Having a lot more fun since I packed it in, although that could also be related to all the sex and drugs and booze that I replaced it with.
