How much pain did he inflict on the world. Can we have some balance in this debate please? No man or woman is perfect or all good. Even God's representative on earth. How many people has Karol Wojtyla condemed to death by AIDS for his ludicrous views on condom use?
Who knows. Millions or tens of millions?
But also it is the persons fault for having sex with out protection and outside of marriage, so it is their own fault if they get Aids.

Whatever you think about the man, it can wait.
I think rather than praising a person to their hilt on their death and then waiting for reality to sink in later, a realistic eulogy is one that shows a person's true greatness and their true failings. I am happy to admit that the Pope did some great things, but his great peacemaking moves were tempered by his archaic views on morality.
The Pope was 'just a man' and all men have failings. This revelation should upset nobody.

No man is an Iland, intire of itselfe; every man
is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine;
if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe
is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as
well as if a Manor of thy friends or of thine
owne were; any mans death diminishes me,
because I am involved in Mankinde;
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.
