This brings up the issue of whether you can summarise an entire country the size of the US in this way. The US as a whole may be generally civilised but there are states the size of countries that are generally not (by the measure of tolerance towards gays).

If you seriously thought that this was a clear explanation of how we know what the "norm" is in the U.S. by your own definition, and whether of not the U.S. is a "civilized country", again by your own definition, then you may be right if you think you are wasting your time, because it is not clear at all.
