It's ready, but it ended up just under 1400 words. But I'll abide by not entering if 500 is the limit.

You don't have no doctor Robert
You don't have no uncle Albert
You don't even have good credit
You can write but you can't edit

I agree with your inclination to say no. I say this as someone whose first effort was over 700 words and has been slashing and honing mercilessly.

ETA: However if enough people want to enter 1000+ word entries and you and the judges are willing, I think it's reasonable to have it as a separate category.

I think we're allowed multiple entries, so you can break your 1400 words up any way you like, although Noodle's way sounds promising 😉.

Last time, we did have an assigned topic, dreamed up by Starrman, possibly during an actual dream, and the blank page mocked me so hard I almost cried.
I cried and couldn't write anything. I still loathe myself for it.

I agree. There is art in brevity. Prose of 500 words will contain far less self-indulgence than longer works, and be far more pleasant for the readers.

Ha! You wait till you read mine. Brevity be damned and self-indulgence take me like a cheap whore.

My point exactly. Whatever misery awaits the reader, they can at least take comfort in the fact that it will end sooner rather than later.

Oh, I'm sure eager readers expect at least 6 thousand from you.

Of course. This is how good prose is written. Particularly important is not including the last part.
