Now, I like a good argument as much as anyone, but I don't think I've ever in my life bothered to argue about religion with anyone. There's just so many more interesting things to talk about, like wars, and extra-marital affairs and student tuition fees...
Erm, anyone agree?
Rich.
You might think this is support from a strange quarter, but the "religious debates" on RHP have been, to me at least, far from satisfying. In fact, extremely frustrating. A good discussion (or debate) about a religious subject requires some form of common ground to start with. On RHP, that cannot be the case because the floor is open to everyone, even those in far outfield as far as the premise is concerned, as well as those on first base.
Often, it ends up basically as pearls before swine.
Some mornings when I open RHP I look for a good debate topic, but all I see is what you describe: Christians and atheists insulting each other. Response: read some Threads in the General Forum, which aren't much more interesting, and then switch off.
Unfortunately, we've also had a few threads about war, which tends to end in Iraq and that leads inevitably to America bashing - also counter-productive.
So, why don't you start a good debate about something that is close to your heart, such as extra-marital affairs or student tuition? Make a case and I will respond - and I promise it will not include any religion!
In peace,
CJ
I'm all for a seperate forum for the discussion of religion. It will help with my rehab. It's so hard to get into the debating forum and not see a thread with religion at the core. My AA (Atheists Anonymous) counsellor says that I should distance myself from religion as often as possible or risk falling off the 'band'wagon.
The path to spiritual sobriety is beset on all sides by the iniquities of science and the tyrrany of RBHILL.
Hi I'm Liam and I'm an atheist. 🙂
I'm not so sure.
I think a religious forum would just die a slow death.. I know i wouldn't bother looking at it anyway..
The debate forum should encompass everything, politics, religion, life and the price of fish.
The problem is with single minded individuals with a bible open beside the keyboard and a head full of evangalical nonsense intent on educating the masses.
If people just ignored those off topic posts wouldn't it just be easier?

it touches were shoved off to a religion board?
1. Food ... No, religion talks about food.
2. Cloths ... No, religion talks about cloths
3. Sex ... No, religion talks about sex
4. Truth ... No, again religion talks about truth
5. Race ... No, religion talks about the races
6. Language ... No, religion talks about language
7. The meaning of life ... again ditto
8. Relationships ... ditto
9. What we teach our children ... ditto
... seems like I could go on, but don't feel the need.
Exactly how would we decide when someone starts pushing
a religious idea into the non-religion board? Wouldn't it be
easier to form a board for those that don't want to see like
Christians and band them from it, and band Atheists who
are offended by them, and Muslims, Mormon, and the thin
skinned posters who don't want to be bothered people and
so on. Heck we could move on to skin color, nationalities,
and any other way someone may have a perspective that
offends us.
We can have everyone be forced to pick a group they belong
too and only those of like thinking would be acceptable into their
boards and band those that do not agree with them. That way no
thin skin poster that gets harmed by seeing someone expressing
a view on topics that may be thought harmful to their worldviews
or personal tastes.
Personally, I think it easier to simply only read those things you
find interesting and avoid posters you know are going to be drawn
topics that are religious in nature. Since no one is forcing anyone
to read any topic or board here or anywhere else.

Student tuition fees?!?!
I know religious discussions can get tiresome, but so can any worn-out subject. I'd say the war in Iraq/Bush is an idiot threads are just as bad as any religious threads...
...yet I find myself participating in them. They certainly are of broader interest than tuition fees. I would have to vote 'no' on moving religion to a separate forum.

That's war.
Anything else?
