The lessons being scrapped by the polish government are about ‘Women’s Rights’ because they feel that it threatens ‘traditional family values’ but what the ultra right wing government really thinks is that it makes electoral sense to appeal to ultra conservative voters, same with the Erdogan regime as was the reassignment of the Hagia Sophia from museum to mosque.
Its no surprise to see an ultra conservative American align themselves with likeminded Muslim and Roman Catholic populist leaders though.
@wolfgang59 saidIn 2012 Turkey still wanted to join the EU. Now it doesn't.
I wonder why Turkey agreed to it?
Turkey was actually the FIRST country to ratify the convention in 2012!
@kevcvs57
that's because this conservative believes in states' rights and freedom for *everybody*
It sounds to me like you have major problems with catholics and muslims.
try to check those emotions, Kev. It's not healthy.
@earl-of-trumps saidI have a problem with any and all religions that impact on personal freedoms and spreads it insidious tentacles into the secular political arena. Talk about brainwashing of children, religions invented brainwashing, it’s what they do

My attitude to extremist fairy tales and the con artists that tout them won’t be changing any time soon earl.
@kevcvs57 saidObviously, I am only concerned that you do not *have* to join a religion.

But we do have rules (laws) about children attending class. They are a captive
audience, literally and figuratively
@teinosuke saidTurkey wanting in or out of the EU is irrelevant to this particular discussion.
In 2012 Turkey still wanted to join the EU. Now it doesn't.
But for the record I don't believe Turkey withdrew its application, the
EU simply refused their entry. I think in 2017 Macron said there was
no way Turkey would be able to join and that negotiations had ceased.
@earl-of-trumps said1. The EU is not saying this and how would the EU affect Turkey (a non-member?)

2. I think you are the one who has been brain-washed.
3. The Istanbul Convention has nothing in it about teaching LGBTQ rights.

Are you still ‘one nation under god’?
Yeah schools can be a double edged sword earl.
@wolfgang59 saidWhen Turkey still thought there was a realistic prospect of its joining the EU, it was eager to appear to adhere to Western norms of human rights. Now that prospect has vanished, Turkey no longer cares.

Unfortunately, the Turkish quest for EU membership accidentally facilitated Erdogan's Islamisation project, since the European Commission had explictly criticised the decision to ban him from Turkish politics, and would have looked coldly on a decision to ban the AKP for anti-secular activities, as nearly happened in 2008.

you hate god, and you hate kids thinking that it is good to believe in national unity
@teinosuke saidWhat???
I expect the human rights situation in the UK to deteriorate significantly once we are no longer bound by European law.
I felt sorry for the human rights of Brits when they had to live under EU control.
Don't blame them for getting out.
