Actor Patrick Swayze died today at age 57.

While my condolences go out to his family, blah blah blah... I couldn't help but noticing two statements as I read a bit about him on the net.

From the article cited above:

Off-screen, he was an avid conservationist who was moved by his time in Africa to shine a light on "man's greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws," he told the AP in 2004.

From his Wikipedia page:

Swayze, a licensed pilot with an instrument rating, made the news on June 1, 2000, while flying with his dogs in his twin-engine Cessna from Van Nuys, California to Las Vegas, New Mexico. His plane developed a pressurization problem over northern Arizona, causing Swayze to make a precautionary landing on a dirt road in a housing complex in Prescott Valley. The plane's right wing struck a light pole that he hadn't seen from the air, but Swayze was unharmed. He locked up the cockpit, left it parked in the subdivision, and obtained a ride (with his dogs) from a passing vehicle, allegedly in order to telephone the authorities. According to the police report, witnesses said that Swayze appeared to be extremely intoxicated and asked for help to remove evidence (including an open bottle of wine and a 30-pack of beer) from the crash site. He made himself unavailable to police for several hours. It was later determined that the alcohol in question was not in the cabin but stored in external storage compartments inaccessible in flight and that the alleged "intoxication" was due to the effects of hypoxia during descent.

Okay, let's assume he wasn't flying drunk.

What in blazes is a guy who's scolding the World for "greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws" doing owning an airplane and taking recreational flights?? He probably used thousands of times the carbon that most people he so scornfully criticized do.

A hypocrite?

Maybe you're right.

But unless you state clearly your active opposition to man's greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws, or state clearly your steadfast support for men and women to own airplanes and take recreational flights that use thousands of times the carbon that most ordinary people do, then there will also be a whiff of hypocrisy about your OP.

Dude, this is the most ridiculous nitpicking in order to attack somebody who is not worth attacking at all.

Hollywood actors have never been coherent anyway, lulz. I hope they're not role models, unless, of course, you adore Eastwood or Arnold, fabulous conservatives who serve as a guiding light together with Ann Coulter's teachings.

Some cheese?

Thanks for showing your true colours. You're a prince.

Is there any indication Swayze refered to carbon usage when he said "man's greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws,"? For all we know he may have felt the extra co2 from his plane was helping the plants.

Really, sh76? A guy dies and you think this crap is worth digging up? I can see if he was a rapist or child molestor, but this is a stupid thing to bring up under the circumstances.

Couldn't agree more. The obit in our news tonight said that if there was one good thing to have come out of it is that since his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer about 2 years ago, Swayse has done more to bring awareness to the chronic illness than anyone else has in the past 20 years.

I just googled Cessna 340 twin engine performance because this thread interested me in it's overall mean natured stinkiness and the claim that Swayze used "thousands of times the carbon blah blah blah".

The Cessna uses 30 gallons per hour of fuel at cruise speed of 250 miles per hour.

A 500 mile flight would require 60 gallons.
In a big SUV with all his dogs a 500 mile drive at 15 MPG would require over 30 gallons.

Calling him a hypocrite over that is just...miserable.

The news item stated he had pressurization problems and had to descend. The claim that he was drunk versus suffering from hypoxia was a crummy thing to do. No evidence of alcohol intoxication was ever substantiated.

Leave the guy alone he's dead.

I much prefer to focus on the elitists in Washington who preach to us that we need cap and trade. Pelosi and her weekend plane trips from Washington to California and back every week come to mind. Biden and his "compound" of 5 mansions all driving SUV's come to mind etc. And the list goes on and on and on and on...... These people are beyond our help other than the help of us showing them the door!!!!
