I much prefer to focus on the elitists in Washington who preach to us that we need cap and trade. Pelosi and her weekend plane trips from Washington to California and back every week come to mind. Biden and his "compound" of 5 mansions all driving SUV's come to mind etc. And the list goes on and on and on and on...... These people are beyond our help other than the help of us showing them the door!!!!

How's that for a carbon footprint? It seems our legislators have the biggest feet on the planet.
Yeah! The President should ride a bike or a use a sail boat on his next trip abroad if he wants to DARE talk about the environment.
Of course, there are two issues here. One is the hypocrisy of those who claim we need to change our lifestyle, but do NOHTING to change their own, and then there is the issue of spending tax payer money wisely and being good stewards of our money. I just find it amusing that in a time when families and businesses are making cut after cut and trying to live within their meas, government is taking the opposite approach. Not only are they not cutting expenses, they are expanding at an ever increasing rate.
In short, the best way to attract attention to ones self is to begin to preach to others about how they should be living. I say put up or shut the @#@# up!! π

I couldn't find anything from a reputable source addressing anything but their trip to Europe.
Q: Did Michelle Obama and her daughters use taxpayer money to take a European vacation?
A: The first lady, her mother and her children did stay in Europe for a private vacation after the president completed an overseas trip on official business. However, no taxpayer money was used for the first family’s personal expenses.

What in blazes is a guy who's scolding the World for "greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws" doing owning an airplane and taking recreational flights?? He probably used thousands of times the carbon that most people he so scornfully criticized do.
How about doing some research on the number of hours that a recreational pilot flies vs. the number of hours that said person (or anyone) drives? Let's check mine, shall we?
In about 9 years of recreational flying I believe I racked up all of 191 hours. Just checked my log book, and that's it. In the same time period I drove about 135,000 miles. If I average at 35 miles per hour that's 3,587 hours.
The carbon footprint doesn't even compare here. In the absence of any kind of real information regarding Mr. Swayze's flying hours vs. his driving hours (or yours, or anyone else's) you have chosen instead to make a grand ignorant statement that says nothing about the subject you are purportedly addressing and everything about your bias - which turns out to be the true informant of what you are purportedly addressing. Never mind facts when opinion will serve just fine, I suppose.
Wow. I think I set a personal record for strongest reaction to a post of mine. π²
I think that it want to break it I'll have to say something like "Dick Cheney is not evil" or something like that. π
First of all, as someone on the Kennedy thread pointed out to me, the timing of a person's death should not matter in criticizing the individual. If his family and friends were on this board, I'd be more sensitive than to criticize him on the day he died. As far as I know, they're not.
What I don't like, and I guess this is broader than just Swayze, is when public figures scold us peons for doing things that they're 10 times as "guilty" of. If you're going to make something your mission in life and tell other people to act in accordance with your mission, at least you ought to follow your own dictates to the extent practical.
Regarding whodey's point, I think it's a little different for politicians, since it's their job to make policy. So, even if they themselves are hypocrites (as with Ted Kennedy and his opposing to the Nantucket Sound wind farm project), at least he could argue that it's his job to dictate policy for the rest of us in spite of his personal behavior. I think actors like Swayze scold the rest of us because they secretly feel a little guilty about how much money they make without doing that much work, and to assuage those feelings, they take up the cause du jour. That's all fine and good; but at least follow the dictates of your cause du jour before you tell everyone else to.
@JB: As an avowed environmentalist, I highly doubt he did not believe that global warming based on CO2 was a concern.
@FMF: I don't think that the government ought to dictate whether people can own private planes. But, if you believe that global warming from CO2 emissions is the pressing issue of our time, I do think it's immoral to own and use a private jet for recreational purposes.
Edit: I retract the "thousands of times" part of my OP. It was an exaggeration. But since people seem to want to take it as a literal assertion, I hereby formally retract it.

EPA smog requirements for automobile specifications and testing is just one of many, many examples. People are still free to buy, for example, a 400 horsepower C6 Corvette if they so choose.

Just because somebody is a self described "environtmentalist" and say, calls for more use of solar power - doesn't mean they're a hypocrit if they fly a private recreational jet. That is, unless they were calling on others NOT to fly theirs.
In my opinion if their is not a direct contradiction calling someone a hypocrit is just playing childis games. Within a few years I hope to buy a fully restored 1st Gen Camaro. But I also support funding and other initiatives to promote higher efficiency and alternative automotive fuel sources. Does that make me a hypocrit?

A smart chap like you should invest his neurons and time in a more worthy target, me thinks.

If so, then yes.
If not, then no.

In any case, this is just a discussion forum. I don't think we're obligated to limit our discussion to things that we can or should actually change.
