Excellent post.

The key word in all these quotes is "Discipline", which derives from the same latin base as "disciple" or follower.

The problem comes when "punish" is substituted for "discipline"... which is to "teach to follow by example".

Yet another example of where a literal interpretation of the Bible falls flat on its face.

I have daughter RBHILL so from the literalist perspective half of those verses don't apply to me.

Well what happens one day when your daughter comes home with the news that she is going to have a baby and she is not married, that is why you should discipline them sometimes.

So beating them and generally hardening them up is best is it?

One thing that is interesting is that "spare the rod" has come to imply punishment with a stick.

Many places in the bible "the rod" is considered the same as "the iron rod of god" or... "the word of God".

To "Cling to the rod" is to follow gods word.

To "spare the rod" can quite easily be read as "failure to teach gods word."

For what it's worth.

Yes disaplin them to some degre, but no violence. No one should have to endure pain. It only leads to them getting into fights because they are used to getting hurt.

First, let's be clear. I do discipline her. I just don't use a damn rod when I do it. I have been told by many that she is well-behaved. She can be tough sometimes, but we've got other methods than hitting her with a "rod."

Well what happens one day when your daughter comes home with the news that she is going to have a baby and she is not married, that is why you should discipline them sometimes.

Well, she'll be on birth control from a young age. She'll be quite knowledgable about baby creation and baby creation prevention long before she's even thinking about sex. So if she comes home pregnant, it's probably due to one of two things:

1) She deliberately desisted with her contraception (which is stupid if you are going to be having sex and don't want to get pregnant)

2) She got really horny and had bad timing (this shouldn't be a problem with the right contraception).

I don't think hitting her with a rod is going to prevent either one of those two possibilities.

So what will I do? Well if she wants the zygote/embryo/fetus to become a child then we'll support her with that.

If she does not want to allow the thing to become a person, I'll drive her down to a clinic and have the process terminated.

Because not teaching the word of God to your child they might not understand what life is all about.

I have tremendous anecdotal evidence that spanking with a rod does not work.

Moreover, I am surrounded by successful, well-mannered people many of whom have at one time or another divulged to me that their parents did not use corporal punishment.

My assessment: At best corporal punishment does no better than other standard forms of discipline. At worst, it creates violent, rebellious young adults.

Hearing that from you so ironic!

Oh yeah RB, since you are the expert on child rearing, how many kids do you have again?
