Another interesting thing about "the rod" is that it is synonymous with "the staff" or a walking stick.
Most learning without books is accomplished "pedantically ", or "On Foot" or "while walking about" from place to place. Plato and Socrates taught this way.
To "spare the rod" can thus be taken as to "withhold a beating with the walking stick" or as "failure to teach while walking".
We have to choose how we will use the term. It's that terrible word again. "Choose"
