I would say the NZ/Australia situation being close to the ideal. If I want to work in Australia I jump on a plane (maskless) tomorrow and go and find a job in Aus. The cost, in dollars, to build a wall should not be compared to the cost, in dollars, of immigration because one does not eliminate/negate/prevent the other.

Everyone, I need to get this out. Shav, on the Socialism thread, once again says no person can be illegal. I helped him out with this:
If I see a guy crash the border, an illegal act, he is an illegal immigrant.
If I see a guy step into a can of paint, he has paint on him. He is thus a painted person. (if he is an immigrant, he is a painted immigrant, or, a painted illegal immigrant if he his illegal).
Whew. Finally, a lib will admit defeat on the forum!

Edit: In America, with our usual vernacular, he might be called simply an illegal, or when there are hundreds of painted people walking around we would shorten the reference to the guy being a 'paint'. Note that Shav takes issue with that, but then, he is not from around here. He is from a place where people try to tell us how to speak, how to act. Do they want us to ride bicycles?
